According to the Honor Based Violence Awareness Network,
there are 5,000 honor killings that happen every year internationally.
A group of us at Northern Michigan University have organized a fundraiser called
“Draw the Line with Daisies” in which we are selling daisy
seeds at $5.00 per packet in order to educate the public and raise funds for
efforts against honor killings. We ask you to please help donate to our cause.
Your small donation can make a large difference and the seeds that you plant
will be a reminder of the beauty of life. All proceeds will be given to the
United Nations Development Fund for Women.
“Human Rights Watch defines "honor killings" as follows:
Honor killings are acts
of vengeance, usually death, committed by male family members against female
family members, who are held to have brought dishonor upon the family. A woman
can be targeted by (individuals within) her family for a variety of reasons,
including: refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a
sexual assault, seeking a divorce—even from an abusive husband—or (allegedly)
committing adultery. The mere perception that a woman has behaved in a way that
"dishonors" her family is sufficient to trigger an attack on her
life.”

Using the scientific method:
Question: What can we do to raise awareness in the United States about honor killings?
Hypothesis: By implementing a fundraiser, we can help educate people within the U.S. and donate monies to the aid and capacity-based agency, United Nations Women's Development Fund.
Experiment: To help aid women and children who are victims of honor killings, we have developed "Draw the Line with Daisies." In this fundraiser, we will be raising awareness about honor killings, educating those we talk to, and funding an agency who works directly to eradicate honor killing.
Analysis/Conclusion: We will be making an abstract once our fundraiser has finished.
